In the morning, we took a drive out to the Historic Columbia River Highway and visited the gorge. It is only a little over an hour drive east of Portland. The winding drive is scenic and the trees are luscious due to the annual rainfall in the area. In the spring, the waterfalls are in full force. Our first stop was at the Vista House. It was built in 1916-1918 as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a comfort station for those traveling on the Historic Columbia River Highway, King of Roads. Inside the interpretive center, there are exhibits of time past and stories of the river gorge. If you look at one of my photo closely, you can spot the seal rock in the middle of the river, the first location where Lewis & Clark saw tidal effect of the Columbia River. Outside, you can see unending spread of the river, extending east and west of the Vista House. Yes, how mighty you are, Columbia River!!!
We continued our drive to our next stop, Multnomah Falls! It is the second-tallest year-round waterfall in the nation. I love this one, look at the cross bridge between the upper and lower falls. There are some old pictures of people in another period admiring this falls in the Vista House exhibitions. I can fantasize the romance of it all. It was busy when we got there. The splashes from the falls and the high sun created too much reflection for proper pictures, but I think you can get a sense of it regardless.
