Reflection 2009 Scrapbook Retreat

It has been at least 6 months since I did any scrapbooking. Ok, I don’t count the few cards I made to send out as birthday, thank you, and holiday cards! It is overdue for one of these creative outings. I also met a new girlfriend through the last wine pairing dinner. Yvette scrapbooks too!!! So now, I actually have a local buddy to do it with. She already signed up for the Reflections event last year. I was the last minute add-on. I wasn’t planning to go by myself. The event is hosted by one of the local scrapbook store, Scrapbook Oasis, at the Newport Beach Hyatt. It started on Thursday night and ended on Sunday afternoon with 7 classes and tons of other events scheduled. We were in for a treat!

Thursday night began with a “Getting Ready Crop”, basically to do all the prep work for the classes in the next 3 days. I painted some cardboard books and made some tiles using diamond glaze and paper stock. By 10pm, I was pretty much done for the night even though the crop goes to midnight. No night owl for me…

Friday morning began with a class by Christine Middlecamp. She is from MN. The project is a mini album; theme is “Yesterday’s Travel”, a subject definitely up my alley. It is very detailed with lots of layering. And it does use a lot of photos, like 30+…good for me to use up the millions of pictures I took each trip. I already have a subject in mind. It won’t be Hawaii as the teacher did. I will make this into a gift to one of my girlfriends. For the entire 3 hours, I was only able to complete the album cover. Since I consider myself as a speedy scrapbooker, this is definitely a surprise for me too!!!

In the afternoon, I had a mini album class with Stephanie Ackerman. This one is in the theme of family remembrance. And the color coordination would go really well with pictures from the tea ceremony during the wedding. I made the entire book during the class. So all I need to do now is pick out the pictures and add my journal. Once it is done, I will post it up on the blog.

A night of make n’ take plus a vendor fair were scheduled for Friday evening. I didn’t even bother with the vendor fair, as I would rather do the scrapbook freebies. There were supposed to be a dessert bar too. Of course, by the time I took a break from the make n’ take, they were all gone!!! All the projects were really fun. There was a bit of waiting but nothing as long as the Archiver’s annual Scrapfest event I go with Vanessa. There were a few ones I didn’t get to do. I was tired by 10pm, yeah, time for bed again. You start to know my sleeping pattern…

Oh, I also had a bit of alcohol inducing after effect. Yvette and I decided to open a bottle of red while we scrapbook. Oh, why not, we are adults and we did meet each other while doing wine pairing dinner!!! So appropriate.

On Saturday, I had 3 classes:
Maggie Holmes - a mini album, the theme is “I Am”. I got to learn a few new techniques and played with some new toys.

Melissa Phillips – a cardboard house, the theme is “home”, shabby chic style. It would be perfect for a beach cottage or a baby shower gift. Unfortunately, no baby shower in sight. I think all my friends are done with the child bearing at the moment!

Mara May – a party hat and two 12x12 layouts. I finished the party hat in the class. I figure it is better to get it done there as I can work on the 2 layouts myself. Otherwise, I may not have the motivation to get that done. Maybe I can trick Makayla into wearing it for her next birthday!

In the evening, they arranged for a bonfire and s’mores. The weather during this time of the year in southern California can be unpredictable. We didn’t have much sun that day. As the evening get closer, it was getting chilly. And I was done. In fact, all four of us (yes, picked up two other scrapbooking buddies during the last two days) didn’t make it to the s’mores.

For Sunday, I had two classes:
Jamie Waters – a mini album about photography. Not sure if you remember, Jamie and her husband were our wedding photographers. It was nice running into them again. I knew she was going to be teaching when I registered. It was great that they both remembered us! Chris gave a presentation about taking better pictures. Then Jamie talked us through a mini book. I decided to use the supplies for 12x12 layouts instead of another mini album!!!

Shannon Tidwell – my last class, all on layouts. She is from Texas, my old hometown. Listening to her southern accents remind me of my friends and my past living in Houston. I get to play with some new products. I like her styles, very colorful and bright, but maybe a bit too focus on children theme for me.

If you wonder what I did with my hubby this entire weekend, I sent him off fishing with his buddies.

Here are some of the make n' take I was able to do:
