Upstairs Guest Room

The upstairs guestroom has an African/Aboriginal theme, displayed with my travel souvenirs from Tibet, Australia, Africa, and Asia. It has a queen bed now. The floor has the same travertine tile since it connects with the Hollywood guest bath. The walls are painted in "Blank Canvas (DE5294)" to complement the guest bath and the tile floor.

This is the only bedroom on the first level. On the original blueprint, it was marked as “maid’s quarter”. Well, we don’t have a live-in maid!!! It was a nice idea indeed but unaffordable for us. The room is next to the laundry room. Imagine, walking in from the main area of the house, you would pass by the guest bath, then this guest room, then the laundry room, and then head into the garage. There are doors that close off each space, so you don’t really hear the noise even when we ran the washer or dryer.

The room is big in size, so is the walk-in closet. I was planning to use it as our exercise room with an elliptical machine. That plan is still peaking in the back of mind but hasn’t come through yet. The big French window opens up to the side yard and a high wall blocking us from the neighbor. It is generally very quiet here and once we fix up the side yard or when the flowering trees and mom's handy gardening work are grown more fully, it would be wonderful.

The bed linen set is from Australia, a bit islander/aboriginal pattern. The batik prints in the frame was from one of my Indonesian visit. I finally had it stretched and framed. Unbelievable, the framing cost like 10+ times more than the batik print; and that is with a standard frame, not even a customized frame!!!

The cowhide lamps stayed on top of the bookcases, as I don’t know what to do with them yet. Too wasteful to be put away!

I am still unsure of this room. Part of the problem is I am trying to reuse as much existing furniture as I could. And it is only doing a decent job for this room. I think the travertine is too cold for this warm tropical theme. Maybe a rug? Maybe I should repaint the bookcases and move them to the corner where the closet door opens into now and turn the bed the other way around? I guess I will wait until I get the elliptical machine first.
