Puur in Hellevoetsluis

I discovered another great restaurant in the area, Puur. With this many trips, we are quickly running out of nice places to eat. Even though the appeal of going somewhere new is diminishing as more trips are piled on each year, there is still a bit of excitement of exploring new places and new things, as long as I have given myself time to rest.

This time of the year, the North Sea herring are in season between mid May to mid July, a tradition the Dutch loves. The herring has been frozen and then laid in salt for a couple days to ripen the fish (soused herring). So, strictly speaking, it is not raw. This was our amuse-bouche at Puur. I had this before a few years ago when someone else brought it into work for us to try. I didn’t like it then. And I still don’t like it now. The herring seems fresh, but it does have a strong taste, kind of like mackerel, same reason why I don’t like saba at sushi restaurants!!! I guess I was supposed to eat this with raw onion to get the real herring taste out. Another reason I don’t like. I can’t eat raw onion!

Other than that, all the other courses were fabulously yummy. I had to tell the wait staff that we are not dining at leisure; else, I would be spending like 3 hours on a meal. This European style of enjoying a meal is just so impractical on a 2 weeks long business trips! I can’t be doing 3 hours dinner each night. I am so totally OK being called “American” in this aspect….

Beet salad and Roast Pork....I had to use the translator apps on my BB to figure out what I was ordering...No English menu....
