For the transplant Californian here, it has been cold, meaning 30 below 80s. Yes, you can LOL…
I am trying to learn about this new neighborhood since I will be moving down here eventually. This is called the South Bay, if you haven’t known. The South Bay consists of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach. Torrance & Palos Verdes are next to this area. All of these are west of Hwy 405.
One of my favorite ways to learn about the neighborhood is through discovering new eateries and shops, meaning new for us, not necessary new for the location.
On a cold night recently, we went searching for Japanese noodles. After reading another blog, I found a place in Gardena. We were driving Tom’s beamer. He was a bit hesitant to try out this restaurant after seeing a homeless person on the street corner. Part of Gardena is not known for its safety…
On the way back, we turned into another strip mall. This time we saw a lot of cars in the parking lot, must be getting better. We decided to try out Sanuki no Sato. The restaurant was not packed; we were able to get a seat immediately. I ordered the Nabeyaki Udon. I wanted to get soba, but they don’t have that in the Nabeyaki style. Honestly, how difficult to replace the udon with soba using the same ingredient???
Tom got the Karanabe Udon. The menu is in both Japanese and English. When it arrived, I was staring at his pot. Oh, my god, it looked so thick and red. Guess what, he didn’t read the “details” of the description properly; totally missing the underlined word “spicy”. As the meal went on, he was quiet, and beads of sweat slowly running down his forehead. I couldn't help myself in teasing him. He really needs reading glasses, but hasn’t really gotten into the habit to bring them along when we go out. Looks like I have to check out what he is ordering next time ….
The food was good (at least my order was good), the broth was steaming hot and that's what I was looking for. When we left the place, there was a line waiting for a table now.
