Today, we cruised to the Glacier Bay National Park. The weather was not cooperative, overcast, drizzling rain, and cold. I wonder what this place would look like when the sun does shine through. It must be mesmerizing, as it is already so beautiful under this suboptimal condition.
Glacier Bay is true to its name, there are numerous glaciers lying along the bay. Some are up high in the mountain; others are tidewater glaciers, meaning a glacier that terminates in the sea. We saw lots of action of glacial calving, where ice breaks off the face of a glacier and falls into the water. The sound can be thundering when a big chunk broke off.
When I looked back to the Glacier Bay map, and recalled here and there of what was mentioned on the cruise, I think we stopped the longest time in front of the Margerie Glacier. And the other one registered to me is the Lamplugh Glacier because I remember the ice cave where the icy water pours into the sea.
The other highlight of the day is the helicopter rescue drill. This happens after the stop at Margerie Glacier. They were practicing unloading and loading basket with patient should there be a real rescue. The kids were excited about that; even the adults were patiently waiting as this doesn’t happen every day. I still don’t think this makes up for the lack of good weather, but it is better than nothing!
