Tulum Ruins

After a decent quiet day in Cancun, we headed out to see our second Mayan ruins on this trip. This was my first visit to the Tulum ruins, located 130 km south of Cancun. The "Tulum Archeological Zone" is the first distinct zone. The sky was not welcoming, it started to drizzle and we didn’t have any rain gear.

There is a large craft market at the entrance as well as a few fast food restaurants and assorted stores. With the coming rain, people were selling umbrellas and ponchos at outrageous prices. They were screaming out prices. And being us, we scream back at half or ¼ of their calling price. At the end, we negotiated 2 ponchos for US$5, still too much since these are basically a very thin plastic cover, think like those produce clear bag at the grocery stores. I didn’t want to take a chance with mom getting sick. All it takes is just a few raindrops and she would start coughing, yes, true experiences multiple times.

Oh by the way, Cancun operates in US currency.

There were not much left of the Tulum ruins. But talk about location, location, location. The archeological site was situated at a beautiful beach in the Caribbean. It stands on a bluff facing the rising sun looking out onto the Caribbean, yes, spectacular!! There were plenty of people in the water. On a hot summer day it is a great way to cool off.

Back to the weather, once the rain dissipated, the sun came out, so did the humidity. We were also very concern with mosquitoes. But we lucked out; maybe they sprayed well since this was a popular tourist site. We listened to the tour guide for a while and then they let us off on our own. We would have stayed longer, but all of a sudden, there was this heavy pouring rain. The few of us that had a poncho on were in decent condition; others, such as my hubby was not so lucky….oh big man, no need of rain gear, got all wet.
