Cedar Creek Estate Winery & Glow-Worm Caves

Our second stop of the day is the Glow-worm Caves. It sounded interesting from the brochure. And we are in the area, why not?

First, I didn’t know the caves were man-made. I was under the assumption it was natural??? Wouldn’t you? Even though the advertised purpose of the caves was supposed to help diverting tourists like us away from the rainforest to “minimize” our impact, I felt kind of a tourist trap after the visit. They could have stated that was man-made and they cultivated the glow-worms…

The cave is actually part of the Cedar Creek Winery. But since I was the designated driver, I have no clue how good the wine is or not. But I did see a lot of people in the tasting rooms.

The tour started with a video presentation of the purpose and construction of the cave. The actually viewing of the glow-worms might be like 10 minutes. No camera, no cell phone, no lights, as you couldn’t see the glows if these were on. This means no pictures here.

The caves had about 8000 of these worms, with special technology to take image of the glow. But you couldn’t count if the worms didn’t turn on their lights. They only turn them on to trap bugs to eat. So it is like 24/7.

It was kind of interesting to see the glow, like staring at the sky with lots of little stars blinking at you at night. So it wasn’t a total waste. And besides, the winery setting was very nice and I got to see fall colors in the middle of May. The half fallen tree below is kind of hilarious and what nature decides to do at times. Not a bad deal.
