Detroit Eastern Market

On my way back from the Netherlands, I stopped in Detroit for the weekend to meet with my girlfriend, Jenn. The week following Netherlands trip, I had to be in Chicago on business. It doesn’t make sense for me to fly from the Netherlands all the way back to CA and turn around within 24 hours to head back out to Chicago. Besides, I was reminded that this visit is overdue since I am now a “married” girlfriend and had not planned our annual gathering this year so far!!!

I arrived on Friday night, totally confused with time zone and jetlag. A quiet evening at a local restaurant in Royal Oak was sufficient for my tired body. In the morning, we started leisurely with a late breakfast at a local diner, and follow with a visit to the farmers’ market in Detroit. In my last visit, we did the same thing. The main purpose of this visit is for us to catch up, so we were not planning on overpacking our days.

There are lots and lots and lots of fresh produces and flowers. The Detroit Eastern Market is huge. Unlike here in SoCal where the farmers market is localized, there, it is centralized. We are in a prime time for fresh fruits. And the prices are very very reasonable. Now I know I am overpaying in SoCal. Explain to me, how can fruits shipped from CA be cheaper in Detroit than in southern California??? They also have local Michigan products and shipments from other states like Florida, Carolina, etc. I need to retire somewhere away from California.

Gosh, a pint of blueberries is priced at $1. Here, a 6 oz. pack is $2.99 if it is on sale!!! Yes, I loaded it up. Then I even found fresh lychees, they are shipped in from Florida. Not bad, at $4/lb. Very sweet. I ate one whole lb by myself for breakfast the next morning. Guess, I shouldn’t brag about over eating, should I? Haha, it’s only FRUIT. We spent at least 1- 1 ½ hour browsing around and making up our minds, not that we really purchased much, but it was fun looking at the spring flowers everywhere.

By the time we arrived home, I negotiated a mid day nap with Jenn before heading back out for our late afternoon outing.

In the late afternoon, we went to Detroit, walked along the river, looking over the river to Canada. We brought Brat with us. And took a few pictures with the little guy...
